Barry Curtis, Finance Director

Intro:

After completing my university degree, I started my career in finance at BDO. I gained my ACA qualification on their Audit Graduate Program and progressed to the role of Audit Manager. I managed a range of clients from rapidly growing start-ups to AIM and LSE listed bodies. I worked in across sectors including Technology Media and communications (including life sciences), Not for Profit, Higher Education, Manufacturing, University spin outs, and Retail and Leisure. During this time, I was also able to have a 4 month secondment to our Australian office in Sydney.

In deciding that I did not want to progress further within the profession of audit, I took my first role in industry at Deltex Medical group, where I supported the FD and CEO in heading up the finance function, and early in my tenure over saw the transition between FDs.

I had a short career break to spend some time with my young family before finding my current opportunity at T J Transport. I head up the finance department and assist in supporting and helping to guide the operational side of the business. I have involved in many interesting projects since I have joined alongside ensuring the financial compliance and management information is completed as required.

Barry’s Bio:

job title:

Finance Director

Specialism:

My professional background has given me exposure to many different companies, industries and sectors, and also to different working practices. I have been involved in fiery corporate board room culture through to more relaxed and smaller Not for Profit entities and experienced the spectrum of people related to these. This has given me a breadth of knowledge that will hopefully enable me to guide, from a financial perspective, any business that I work with and also enable me to effectively communicate with any type of individual.

Favourite part of job role:

My favourite part of my job, aside from working with people, is the wide range of projects and tasks that we engage with. Being a family run business we can be flexible and commence upon varied and interesting projects.

Strengths:

A core part of my background is in financial compliance and part of the initial evolution of my (new to the group) role was internalising the finance reporting function and developing robust financial controls. I have assisted the MD in the enhancement and implementation of various process improvements and implemented different IT systems as the various parts of the business grow and develop. I also really enjoy working with a variety of different colleagues from various walks of life, and where the opportunity arises help them develop, learn and progress.

Why do you enjoy working for TJ WASTE?

I enjoy working for the TJ group because, whilst it continues to grow and the corporate structure is enhanced, it still retains a family run business level of interaction amongst the staff, management, and other companies we work with

LENGTH OF SERVICE:

5 years

OUTSIDE OF WORK:

I have a young family and so outside of work much of my time is with them. I have an interest in fitness and running and look to participate in obstacle course racing and distance running throughout the year. I follow and enjoy most types of sport and take my son to his weekly football practice.

I am not phased by much and have done activities including sky diving, bungee jumping, skiing, snowboarding, snorkelling and scuba diving. I also have an interest in travel to foreign countries and so look forward to being able to get back into this once the effects of the global pandemic have subsided.
