TJ continues to invest in staff development

Jack Macfarlane, Head of Compliance

TJ is continuing to invest in staff development by putting two members of staff through CPC for Transport Managers training. Head of Compliance Jack Macfarlane and Transport Operator Dion Hinton have both recently undertaken the training and passed the courses successfully.

As a company that operates lorries for hire and reward we have a legal obligation to hold an operator’s licence and declare a competent transport manager on that licence. That individual, or individuals in our case, must be deemed competent by law and this CPC training ensures that these staff members are fulfilling that requirement.

These laws are in place to ensure that drivers comply with tacho laws, all vehicles are in a safe, road worthy condition and that drivers stick to road laws at all times.

This qualification not only enables existing transport managers to comply with the legal obligations outlined above, but also provides those looking to embark on a career as a transport manager with an advantage that will stand them in good stead when applying for roles. This qualification is open access and requires no prior knowledge, skills, understanding or qualifications.

The Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) for Transport Managers in Road Haulage is offered by CILT(UK) on behalf of the Department for Transport and includes a range of subjects related to the business of road transport.

Jack and Dion completed the course at 2Start, a local training provider in Hilsea. The qualification is delivered as a 10-day intensive course over a two-week period. The course covers topics such as financial management, vehicle costing, drivers hours, business and company law.

There are two exams to sit at the end; a two-hour multi-format exam consisting of 40 questions and requiring a 70% pass mark, and a 2¼-hour case study exam featuring three case study questions and a 50% pass mark.

“I continue to appreciate all the support TJ provides, particularly in regards to continuing professional development. As a company they’re great at encouraging staff and are keen to invest in those who wish to progress. I’m also pleased to now be named on the company’s operator’s licence.”
